MetalMan's quiet American
Article Abstract:
Metal Manufactures had an eventful 1998 when electrical suppliers Consolidated Electrical Distributors (CED) bought a 30% holding and Rexel unsuccessfully bid for the electrical distribution part of the business. Fifty percent of Metal Manufactures' sales and profits are in the distribution of electrical supplies. Instead of accepting the Rexel bid, Metal Manufactures offered its shareholders a fully-franked 50 cents special dividend, placing the share value at between $2.52 and $3.10. Analysts predict CED to make another share raid.

Resources surprise in share surge
Article Abstract:
In 1998, the Australian stock market was dominated by banking, industrial, and telecommunications stocks, but in 1999 investors have been pleased about the surge in the earnings of a wider variety of stocks, including the biggest surprise: resource stocks. Consumer confidence and international interest in Australian stocks has increased. Among resource stocks, Woodside is clearly a winner. In January 1999, its stock was slightly over $7, but it has been as high as $10.46 since then. Mining stocks have also gained.

In e-commerce, size matters
Article Abstract:
The successful Internet-based companies tend to be large and have focused on transforming business processes into electronic commerce processes to lower costs, increase productivity, and increase customer service. Few of Australia's electronic commerce stocks exceeded their opening day prices or have went as high as comparable American e-commerce stocks. However, there is no certainty that even large Internet-based companies can sustain large share profits.
