Minimum wage vote blocked in Senate

Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole led a successful effort to block a Senate vote on a proposal to increase the minimum wage from $4.25 to $5.15. Dole accused Pres Clinton of capitulating to organized labor. He also filed a complaint against an AFL-CIO political contribution.

Clinton proposes minimum-wage hike

Pres Clinton submitted to Congress a proposal to increase the hourly minimum wage from $4.25 to $5.15 by 1996. Under the plan, the minimum wage would rise to $4.70 in 1995 and $5.15 in 1996. Most Republican leaders announced their opposition to the increase.
