Multimarket contact, economies of scope, and firm performance
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive model of economic performance was empirically examined within the context of the US airline industry. The objective was to investigate the association between the presence of resource-sharing opportunities and multimarket contact and their joint impact on efficiency, rivalry and profitability. The rich information obtained from the industry allowed the calculation of independent and dependent variables at very disaggregate levels. Results provide evidence that airlines are better off pursuing economies of scope in the same markets as competitors.
