Invitation to a transformation

Article Abstract:

A description of the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly is likened to the transformation of Robert Louis Stevenson's character in 'Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.' The description is taken from a series of classes that Vladimir Nabokov gave in the 1940s and 1950s. Nabokov much appreciated the process by which the caterpillar turned into a butterfly. The discomfort the insect feels right before it encases itself is postulated.

Nalco Chemical and Betz Laboratories are the world's largest marketers of water-treatment chemicals. The treatment companies are also selling engineering services. During the 1970s the firms had an annual earnings growth of about twenty per cent. With the decline of industrial and oil production demand for their services has slackened. Earnings estimates for 1984 are being scaled back.

Two participants in the race from Dyea, AL to Dawson, Yukon Territory, Canada recount their experiences during the race. The trek provided the two adventurers a chance to retrace the history of the stampeders who took part in the 1897-1898 gold rush and to test their mental and physical endurance.
