PC demand is offset by shrinking prices
Article Abstract:
Personal-computer shipments were up in 3rd qtr 1998, but this was not reflected in revenue gains because of falling prices. According to market researcher International Data Corp, worldwide shipments of PCs were up 15% compared with the same quarter in 1997. Dataquest estimates an increase of 13.7% compared with the year-earlier figure. Dataquest forecasts a total increase of 14% for 1998 compared with the previous year, and IDC forecasts 11%. Both researchers say pricing pressures will continue, and neither foresees any increase in revenue. During the past two years the average selling price of a PC has dropped to $1,100 from about $2,000, and profit margins are under particular pressure from sub-$1,000 computers. However, falling prices are having the effect of sustaining strong demand.
