Panel to urge big U.S. effort in technology; a call to double funds for compuer research
Article Abstract:
The President's Information Technology Advisory Committee, made up of industry representatives from companies including Intel, Microsoft, AT&T, Sun Microsystems and IBM, and also of leading university researchers, is to release a report of its findings. In it, they reccommend increased government funding of research in high technology, pointing to both the hisory of government funding in the past which has resulted in the Internet and the microchip, and to the diminished amount of government investment in research in the last decade. The report advises that research be concentrated in four areas, these being software, improvements in the Internet infrastructure, high-end computing, and the social impact of developments in information technology. The Y2K problem, and the vulnerabilities of the large software systems used by our financial system and for air traffic control are cited as examples proving the necessity of government investment. Under the proposed plan, most funding would go to university-sponsored research.

Mannesmann seeking a British mobile phone company
Article Abstract:
German telecommunications company Mannesmann AG has been in discussions with Orange PLC, a United Kingdom mobile telephone services concern, about a possible acquisition. Though the German company declined to comment formally, industry analysts say Vodaphone Airtouch PLC, a minority stakeholder, may attempt a hostile takeover of Mannesmann. Deutsche Telekom, a German competitor in the European telecommunications market, recently purchased the British mobile phone company One 2 One while France Telecom has agreed to acquire a controlling interest in German-based E-Plus from Veba and RWE. Because European telecom systems share a digital standard, mergers and takeovers are much easier than in the United States.
