Parliament votes to oust cabinet

In a 292-15 vote the Ukrainian parliament passed a no-confidence measure and removed the nation's cabinet, though Pres Leonid Kuchma said he would continue radical economic reforms anyway. Ukraine also approved a new budget and received $1.96 billion in credits from the International Monetary Fund.

Russia: IMF sets loan to back economic reforms

The IMF agreed to loan Russia $10.2 billion to support the country's efforts to build a free-market economy. The loan will be paid over a three-year period and will pay welfare benefits and wages for employees who are at risk of losing their jobs. The loan has specific provisions that must be met.

President, premier battle over economy

Ukrainian Premier Kuchma insisted that he could not implement economic reforms without powers such as control of the central bank and the anti-monopoly commission. Pres Kravchuk did not support Kuchma's request for an extension of the government's economic powers.
