The methods used by the Australian public accountancy profession for calculating fees are discussed, with focus on the practice of billing time spent at an hourly rate, compared with charging a fixed fee based on value created.

The background to the creation of a co-operative of public accountants in Australia is discussed. The operation of the scheme, which allows firms to buy and earn shares in and eventually sell their business to the co-op, is analysed.
