Tom Mattox's Retreading Equipment Inc was able to avoid bankruptcy by taking out a loan with GE Capital Small Business Finance Corp, a nonbank lender that is also a subsidiary of General Electric Co. Since taking out the loan in mid-1993, the company's sales have grown at an annualized rate of 5% or more.
