Rivals stretch thinking to tackle next-century battlefield demands
Article Abstract:
The US Air Force's future unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) program pits the big four defense contractors against each other. Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems (Fort Worth, TX), Boeing Co. (Seattle, WA), Raytheon Systems Co. (Arlington, VA) and Northrop Grumman Corp., Military Aircraft Systems Div. (El Segundo, CA) each received $4 million to research and design a future UCAV at one-third the cost of the Joint Strike Fighter. Each of the contractors is expected to submit a finalized operational system design in November 1998. The second phase will see the selection of one contractor to pursue the work for another 42 months with a $110 million contract.

Laboratory scientists close in on laser missile mauler
Article Abstract:
Researchers from Boeing, Lockheed Martin and TRW are developing advanced technologies needed for a theater airborne antimissile laser. Boeing (Seattle, WA), the leader of the group, is developing the battle management system and is responsible for integrating the program's systems. Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space (Sunnyvale, CA) is developing the beam control and fire control systems. TRW (Redondo Beach, CA) is tasked with developing the laser and related ground support subsystem. The companies envision a megawatt-class laser system that would cruise at 40,000 feet close to a theater of operation.

Qualicon tracking system puts the squeeze on bacteria
Article Abstract:
Qualicon Inc. is developing the RiboPrinter system that analyzes data on food safety by determining the presence of bacteria in foodstuffs. One study is currently being done on raw poultry products such as whole broilers, packaged legs and boneless breast. Qualicon tries to find out the source of bacteria through the patented processes for the RiboPrinter system. This method is utilized to sample the food products and analyze the DNA fingerprints of bacteria. Scott Fritschel, marketing manager for Qualicon, said a newly-developed process protects a means of determining and characterizing organisms.
