Sequencing Rules and Due-Date Assignments in a Job Shop
Article Abstract:
Recent research studies of job shop scheduling have begun to examine the interaction between sequencing priorities and the method of assigning due-dates. This paper surveys the tactical aspects of this interaction, focusing primarily on average tardiness as a measure of scheduling effectiveness. The discussion highlights several factors that can affect the performance of dispatching rules, such as the average flow allowance, the due-date assignment method, and the use of progress milestones. A set of simulation experiments illuminates how these factors interact with the dispatching rule, and the experimental results suggest which combinations are most effective in a scheduling system. Flexibility on overtime rules is overdue
Article Abstract:
The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 requires employers to pay employees 150% for each hour worked after 40 hours in a week. This requirement makes it difficult for employees to work extra on one day so they can take time off another time to spend with their families.

Journalists win overtime pay case
Article Abstract:
An appeals court in Boston, MA, ruled on Jan 24, 1995, that the 'Concord Monitor' must pay 10 reporters and two photographers $21,000 in overtime pay. The decision contradicts another recent case where a judge ruled a journalist was not eligible for overtime pay.
