Shortages of an Intel microprocessor create backlogs, headaches
Article Abstract:
Demand for Intel Corp.'s Pentium III Xeon chip, used in servers, is rising, and the company reports it will have trouble filling orders. The PC industry is just climbing out of a Y2K-related new-order slowdown, so the shortage comes at a bad time. A large storm in Taiwan has also delayed shipment of PC components from factories there.

Compaq will switch to Intel processors
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer will suspend production of its Alpha chips and use Intel's Itanium semiconductors in all its servers so Compaq can follow IBM's lead and concentrate on computer services, software and systems. The Alpha came to Compaq via the $9 billion acquisition of Digital Equipment and Compaq will license the chip's intellectual property to Intel after making one mover version, the EV7 before converting to Itanium. Compaq chief Michael Capellas says the move will boost confidence among customers and feels sales won't be affected by the transition. Intel wins great creditibility for its chips, which is more powerful than Pentiums.

H-P tries to rally employees' support of deal
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is attempting to consolidate support for the company's merger with Compaq Computer among her employees, even though perhaps 15,000 layoffs may emerge from the merger. Board members, outside directors and former H-P executives are e-mailing employees, holding social gatherings, broadcasting support to employees and chatting up investors to fight the opposition for the merger led by Walter Hewlett. Many employees are happy to be considered in the discussion and according to Ms. Fiorina, most support the deal.
