The impact of a structured-argument approach on group problem formulation
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to compare two group problem formulation methodologies. The structured argument approach involves formal reasoning while the group process approach requires private idea generation before public sharing and idea evaluation. Results showed that the use of the structured argument approach was more time-consuming and did not result in more information search and equivocality reduction in a group setting. However, it improved coverage of critical issues and consensus on the issues discussed. Moreover, the structured approach technique led to higher satisfaction regarding problem definition and commitment to implementation.

Insights from attempts to validate a multi-attribute model of problem definition quality
Article Abstract:
Problem definitions (PD) are evaluated after the process of problem structuring, but prior to any attempted generation of alternatives. The PD are treated to both objective and subjective evaluations, where the objective evaluation uses a multi-attribute value (MAV) model due to Sakman, while the subjective approach uses evaluations given by expert judges. Results show that the MAV model is a reasonable tool for eliminating poor problem definitions.
