The relative significance of forecast errors in multistage manufacturing
Article Abstract:
The importance of forecast errors on total inventory and past-due demand, in a multi-stage manufacturing situation, is examined. The environment is characterized as involving demand, supply and lead time uncertainties. A simulation is used to study the effects of mix of special and standard products, lot-sizing, and buffering policies on customer service and inventories. Forecast variability is seen to be a less important factor than forecast bias on past-due demand and inventory.

Alternative methods of learning and process improvement in manufacturing
Article Abstract:
Previous exposure to improvement methods enhances a manufacturing company's effort towards learning and process improvement. Such exposure enhances a company's decision-making ability in selecting future improvement methods. Selection of improvement methodology also harnesses managers' learning ability by being informed not only on their companies' manufacturing system, but also on ways their operation will learn.
