The relative significance of forecast errors in multistage manufacturing

Article Abstract:

The importance of forecast errors on total inventory and past-due demand, in a multi-stage manufacturing situation, is examined. The environment is characterized as involving demand, supply and lead time uncertainties. A simulation is used to study the effects of mix of special and standard products, lot-sizing, and buffering policies on customer service and inventories. Forecast variability is seen to be a less important factor than forecast bias on past-due demand and inventory.

Previous exposure to improvement methods enhances a manufacturing company's effort towards learning and process improvement. Such exposure enhances a company's decision-making ability in selecting future improvement methods.
