The top 500 private Australian companies are ranked by total revenues. Tattersall's, a cultural and recreational services company, had the highest revenues with $9.8 million Australian. The location of the companies, their revenue for 1998, the percentage of change in revenue from 1997 and the industry type are given. Company rankings for 1998 and 1997 and the number of employees in 1998 are also provided.

An overview is presented of four Australian business executives who have been successful in starting up their own companies, including The Heat Group and Platypus Technologies. In a country with a risk-averse venture capital industry and a smaller marketplace than that of the United States, it takes longer to build new businesses, but these four entrepreneurs show that it is possible.
