Thousands die in Rwanda refugee-camp closures; government disputes death toll estimate

Rwandan troops killed as many as 2,000 refugees in the Kibeho refugee camp after the refugees charged them. The government claims only 300 people were killed during the melee. Some attempts to close refugee camps have been violent, and countries who pledged aid may suspend it because of violence.

Iranian Pres Hashemi Rafsanjani Jan 31, 1993, refused to remove the death edict imposed on writer Salman Rushdie by the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini for the writer's publication of the book 'Satanic Verses,' which Khomeini labeled as blasphemous.
