Time for tobacco industry to pay the piper
Article Abstract:
The tobacco industry has agreed to settle with 46 states all remaining state claims concerning smoking-related healthcare costs in a landmark agreement in Nov 1998. Under the agreement, cigarette companies will pay some $206 billion over a 25-year period to settle state lawsuits and reimburse states for the cost of treating smoking-related illnesses. It also includes provisions aimed at reducing underage smoking, limiting cigarette advertising and implementing smoking cessation programs. The industry logged a decline in profits, while the alcoholic beverage industry showed mixed profit trends from Jan-Sep 1998.

Article Abstract:
The tobacco industry is faced with several major political and legal problems in 1999, although it managed to avoid federal legislation in 1998 that could have curtailed its operations. Tobacco stocks increased 10%-20% in 1998, but price increases may be offset by lower consumption and a declining US market. These stocks are not attractive for long-term growth and Phillip Morris is the sole timely stock in 1999.
