U.S. applies pressure on Mexico, Cofetel and Telmex by taking complaint to WTO

U.S. trade representative Charlene Barshefsky announces that the U.S. will seek WTO action to require the Mexican government to open the $12 billion Mexican telecommunications market to U.S. companies. The complaint focuses on the Mexican telecommunications firm Telefonis de Mexico, and specifically charges the company with failing to provide interconnection services to competing carriers, high interconnection charges, and an overall lack of regulatory oversight.
