Renting-out a vacation home offers appreciable economic and tax benefits. The income from rent for 14 days may go unreported on the tax return, however, further rental earnings should be declared. Depreciation expenses on a vacation home is tax deductible, as are expenses for maintenance and home repairs. Keeping a filed record of the purchase documents of the house, the receipts for maintenance and repairs, records of dates that homeowners stayed at the vacation home, rental agent reports and the first property tax bill is advisable.
