Business-to-business Internet companies are the latest victims of the economic slowdown and corporate belt-tightening. Many are planning huge layoffs and projecting sales for the year that are way below expectations. Some will probably close down altogether. One of the sector's leaders, Mountain View, CA-based Ariba Inc. saw its stock trading 97% down from its 12-month high of $173.50.

Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (HP) vice-president of corporate sales, Dick Watts, has announced his resignation. Mr. Watts is resigning to join a young firm in Silicon Valley. Mr. Watts is one of the best-known executives at HP. He is expected to join ConvergeNet, which is a start-up that manufactures high-end computer-storage products. Mr. Watts did not comment publicly on his resignation from HP.
