Voting for and against unions: a decision model
Article Abstract:
Most models of elections involving trade-union representation and certification are concerned only with worker dissatisfaction. The union certification voting model developed by this research also considers factors such as: personal beliefs about unions; employer resistance to unionization; work context; and desire for change. The model identifies five types of voters: pro-union voters with pro-union sentiments who want to change their work context; anti-union voters with anti-union sentiments (these voters may also abstain from voting); pro-union voters with pro-union sentiments who desire no change in work context; anti-union voters and abstainers who perceive the corporation as the only organization that is instrumental in making changes; and frustrated workers who abstain from voting because they do not believe in the effectiveness of unions, organizations, or themselves.
