Xerox, beset by problems, lost ground to rival Canon in 2000, study finds
Article Abstract:
Gartner Dataquest has measured the number of Xerox machines sold, 25% of the market as opposed to Canon's 32% for the year 2000. In 1999, Xerox had 28%, Canon 29%. The report is based on number of copy machines sold. Xerox admits to a messy reorganization of its sales force and billing fiascos but says the second half of last year went more smoothly. Xerox lost $384 million last year, or 63 cents a share.

Seeking a lift, Xerox to launch big color printer
Article Abstract:
Xerox Corp. is set to ship its gigantic new color printer, FutureColor, this fall. The machine will sell for around $500,000, and promises to cut the cost of customized printing. The machine is not a copier, but rather a huge digital printer. Rival Heidelberger Drucksmaschinen AG will soon launch a color printer of its own, developed in its joint venture with Eastman Kodak Co., NexPress Solutions LLC. The NexPress 2100 will sell for around $350,000. Analysts think Xerox, which is looking to 'production color' to account for 25% of its income by 2006, faces a stiff challenge, as most of the high-end printers will at first be bought by Heidelberg's customer base, not by Xerox's traditional copy shop and corporate clients.
