Yahoo! informs the world it's now an e-mall
Article Abstract:
Yahoo! Inc. has launched a new ad campaign to persuade consumers to think of it as a shopping site rather than just a Web directory service and entry portal. The change in emphasis is part of an effort to meet the expectations of investors who believe that the firm can gain financial leverage by tapping into its enormous non-paying membership. The ads, produced by Black Rocket ad agency in San Francisco, are appearing on television. Yahoo! reports that this month members made $100 million in purchases from affiliated shopping sites. These buyers represent represent a small fraction of the 105 million users of Yahoo's other services. Company officials say they are not boosting end-of-year ad spending, but analysts say the firm will spend $64.5 million on marketing in the fourth quarter, with most of that being spent on advertising.

RJR Nabisco plans cuts in both tobacco and food units
Article Abstract:
RJR Nabisco's worldwide tobacco workforce of 25,000 people will be reduced by about 15.6%, or 3,900. Most of those cuts will be outside the U.S. The food division is also cutting back by 1,500 jobs, all of those in the U.S. The tobacco litigation settlement is seen as one reason for the move; also, the economic situation in the former Soviet Union is a factor; smokers there are buying cheaper, local brands of cigarettes.
