VisualSoft (India) Ltd of Hyderabad has set up two development centres with one totally dedicated to Platinum Technology Inc of the US with which it has a tie-up to market VisualSHIFT. The company has four different strategic groups - Open Systems, Reengineering and Y2K, Cyberwing and Research & Development. The company has clients like Mobil, Zales Corporation, Unisys Corporation, KPMG Peat Marvick and WallMart. Its turnover increased by 120 percent to Rs41.33 million in the first quarter of 1998-99 while net profit increased by 123 percent to Rs12.8 million when compared to the first quarter of 1997-98. It has projected a turnover of Rs70 million for 1998-99. (khr)

INDIA TO FEED HUNGRY AMERICAN IT INDUSTRY DESPITE SANCTIONS

India will continue to be a major source for software engineers to fill positions in the information technology (IT) industry in the US despite the sanctions enforced by the US government. Software companies like Microsoft, IBM and Oracle are setting up development centres in India to train software personnel. The IT industry has an estimated shortage of 190,000 personnel at any given time. Independent surveys say that the shortage could be as high as 400,000 and this restricting the growth of IT companies in the US. (khr)

COGNIZANT TECH TO EXPAND IN INDIA

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation of the US has decided to expand and double its software development capacity in India. Cognizant Technology Solutions India Ltd, its 100 percent subsidiary, has set up 3 software development centres at Chennai, Calcutta and Pune. The parent, which raised $22 million through an initial public offering in the US, plans to invest 50 percent of the proceeds in India to double its hardware capacity and set up network and training facilities.
