Ryutaro Hashimoto may prove to be an effective adocate of political and economic reform during his tenure as Japan's prime minister. Since the Liberal Democratic party leader took office in Oct 1996, Hashimoto has made it clear that deregulation and bureaucratic reform are his government's main aims.

Whispering reform

Japan's Ryutaro Hashimoto has pursued a reformist agenda since becoming prime minister in Oct 1996, and his well-conceived reforms may well restore prosperity to Japan. Hashimoto has curtailed the power of financial and transportation bureaucrats, and further deregulation measures are planned.

Despite the broad consensus in favor of deregulation amongst Japanese economists, the current pace of deregulation in Japan is very slow. The barriers that exist between the Japanese banking and securities industries are restricting the growth of both.
