A brief history of beefing
Article Abstract:
There have long been disagreements between France and Britain over food. The French were depicted as feeding on an inadequate diet in an 1748 painting by William Hogarth, who showed the British as eating beef. The terms 'restaurant' and 'cafe', which come from France, were used by the end of the 18th century, indicating a French influence, while French chefs traveled to Britain following the French revolution. French cuisine came to represent sophisticated eating, though new British chefs have emerged in the 1990s, and there are restaurants from all parts of the world.
