A change of taste
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's growing affluence and the resultant increase in travel have made consumers more sophisticated at the same time tariffs and market barriers have fallen, creating new patterns of taste and consumer spending. Imported goods from the US and especially Japan are losing market share, while those from Europe, most notably France and Italy, are hot. Previously unavailable items now for sale include French wines and perfumes, European cars, Italian dresses, and American beer. Imported beer demand is rising 20% annually.

Father knows best
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's laws on marriage and divorce remain patriarchal and heavily skewed in favor of husbands, though recent Council of Grand Justices rulings found some provisions unconstitutional. The civil code on divorce, written in 1942, gives men custody of children, leading some women to pay for custody. Women married before 1985 do not retain their own property, and cultural beliefs treat sons as the property of their fathers.
