Adventures in space for Asian community
Article Abstract:
Architects appointed to design homes for an Asian community in Birmingham, England, consulted with community members to discover their needs. Two key requirements of the community were spaciousness and modern design. The houses, due to be built in 1999, will be modern, but the concrete frame construction and the courtyard arrangement of some of the homes reflects features common in Pakistan. Architects Shillam & Smith have also incorporated flexibility. Owners will, for example, be able to divide the large bedroom space into smaller bedrooms, or add additional floors.

Breaking the Victorian mould
Article Abstract:
Architect Tom Pike has incorporated many of the features which are commonly used in refurbishments of Victorian terrace houses into a new-build home which adjoins an existing terrace. These features include an open space through from the front sitting room to the back kitchen, and a widening of the kitchen to the boundary of the site. The design also incorporates three floor, a result which is often obtained in a refurbishment by having a loft conversion.
