Close encounters with concrete architecture
Article Abstract:
Piers Gough of architect CZWG says that the use of concrete as a building material is undeveloped in the UK, compared with many other European countries. Gough is proud of the exotic facade of the all-concrete China Wharf building in London's Docklands, which looks deceptively like painted steelwork. The building's river-front elevation is reminiscent of the exotic colours of the spice boats that once docked in Cinnamon Wharf.

Trials of strength promise major construction benefits
Article Abstract:
The European Concrete Building Project, based at BRE Cardington, is aimed at assessing the use of alternative materials and methods of construction. A seven-storey building has been built in-situ, with concrete donated by Readymix (UK) which will use the project to test the feasibility of full-scale production of high-strength concrete.
