A continental drift - to the left
Article Abstract:
Left of center political parties are gaining power in the European Union (EU) and have power or share power in 13 EU countries. There is hope for greater cooperation, especially as Germany, France and the United KIngdom all have similar types of parties in power. There are still differences of opinion, with greater distrust of the market in mainland Europe leading to different employee protection and employment policies. The UK's Tony Blair resembles mainland Europe's Christian democrats in some ways, though he is keener on the market.

The slow march to greater bonding
Article Abstract:
The Party of European Socialists is one of the European political parties involved in elections to the European parliament. Developing a manifesto acceptable to different nations is not easy, and pledges may appear vague. There are divisions between the United Kingdom Labor party, and European parties which tend to be more interventionist. The European People's Party represents the political right, and around half of Euro members of parliament are in one or other of the major two groupings, an increase from under half in 1979.

Europe's voters stay at home
Article Abstract:
Elections for the European parliament in Jun 1999 have been characterized by a low turnout across Europe. The British Labor Party, German Social Democrats and French Gaullists all performed poorly in the elections, which reflected national domestic concerns in most member countries of the European Union, with foreign affairs important in Greece and Austria. There was a general moev to the political right, with some exceptions such as Portugal, Spain and France.
