Many analysts believe that the electoral victory of the right wing Bharatiya Janata Party and other sectarian groups will bring political instability and social upheaval to India. The country's new coalition government is inherently unstable and it is not likely to push aggressively for the completion of ongoing economic reform programs. The realignment of political power is also expected to have an impact on Indian society.

The Chinese government is reducing the risks regarding electoral politics in Hong Kong and residents are worrying that the election may limit the number of participants. There are fears that the people in power will be those selected by China and not those selected by Hong Kong residents. China is revising election rules in Hong Kong and these revision threaten to undermine the democratic foundations of electoral politics.

The village elections in China is just on of the steps in the learning process towards the development of democracy in the country. There are parties that accuse the government of making a mockery of elections while other parties contend that the event is just the start of a truly national democracy. The elections are just part of the learning process that China may or may not continue.
