A schooling in community values

Article Abstract:

Architect, Plincke Leaman and Browning (PLB) has designed a school for West Sussex County Council. The Council insisted on full involvement in the design process with the architects required to make numerous presentations and attend large design meetings. PLB developed the concept of 'school as village' and the design groups classrooms in clusters with other buildings reflecting their function. The design team members were allowed individual responsibility for buildings and the result is a mixture of forms which gives the design its strength.

Delights of the global garden

Article Abstract:

Several projects will be initiated worldwide in celebration of the millenium in the year 2000, including specially-designed gardens. The gardens will feature in a worldwide attempt to interconnect different countries and will use a variety of plants, many of which will not be indigenous to the country where the garden is situated. The use of modern technology will facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. Other projects include the construction of climate beacons to allow comparison of data on worldwide climatic changes.

The enchanted forest

Article Abstract:

The Mindelunden forested park, adjoining the Jaegerspris Palace north of Copenhagen, Denmark, contains more than 50 monuments. The park was originally a nature reserve, but monuments began to be installed there in the mid-1770s. Mindelunden bears traces of many different times and traditions, and gives a valuable insight into trends in urban and landscape design. It celebrates the co-existence of apparently opposing trends, such as Classical and Romantic and nature and culture.
