Recent research on the historical and psychobiological origins of music sheds considerable light on this uniquely human activity. Fossil evidence suggests that humans made music as early as 60,000 BC. Research on music processing in the brain indicates similarities to human language processing.

Researchers are making advances in nuclear magnetic resonance imaging so that it can not only look at brain structure but also its function. Echo-planar imaging can generate images so rapidly that brain activity from one moment to the next can be analyzed.
