The ASEAN countries formed the ASEAN Regional Forum to work on preventing conflicts in the wake of declining US involvement in regional security. The members considered attending Pres Clinton's proposed trade summit in Seattle, WA, though Malaysian Pres Mahathir Mohamad opposed it.

The ASEAN Regional Forum will meet in Jul 1996 to discuss security issues. Chinese aggression poses the most serious threat, but arguments over ocean resources and sea territory are also a problem. Also, ASEAN members tend to avoid issues involving conflict.

The fourth ASEAN summit was held in Singapore on Jan 27th-28th. The economy was the major topic for the officials from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei. The group is trying to determine its future relations with Japan.
