El Salvador's government and the Farabundo Marti Liberation Front (FMLN) have agreed on a Feb 1 ceasefire that will end the 12-year civil war. UN leader Javier Perez de Cuellar's peace effort, terms of the agreement, future of the military, and the US role are discussed.

Truth will out

A UN Truth Commission recently completed an investigation into killings and human rights abuses in the El Salvadorean civil war. It found that 90% of war crimes were committed by government forces, including the murders of Archbishop Oscar Romero and six Jesuit priests.

Apeace treaty has finally ended the bitter decade long civil war in El Salvador. The history behind the conflict is examined. As a major player in the long conflict, the US should now help El Salvador maintain the peace.
