A summer of hot account activity
Article Abstract:
The media planning and buying services industry posted $154.3 million worth of accounts in the 3rd qtr 1999 compared to the same period in 1998 which recorded only $119.9 million. The figure also makes it the most active quarter in 1999. Leading the big account winners in 3rd qtr 1999 was OMD Canada whose media account with Telus was worth $35 million. Other companies contributing to the 3rd qtr statistics were Cossette Communication- Marketing, Starcom, MacLaren McCann and Western International Media.

Hybrid Canada

The media buying business in Canada can be described as a hybrid of the European and US models. European media companies are increasingly moving upstream by providing marketing consultancy services, while US ad agencies are still reluctant in setting up stand-along media specialists shops. In Canada, several ad agencies have spun off their media buying and planning operations. However, Canadian independent media buying units have not yet branched into being marketing consultants.

Bozell lives on in North America
Article Abstract:
True North Communications will not merge its FCB Worldwide and Bozell Worldwide subsidiaries in Canada as it does elsewhere in the world other than the US. Conflicting beer accounts are preventing the merger of the Canadian units. Bozell does advertising work for Labatt Breweries, while FCB counts Coors Canada among its clients. True North expects the merger of its two subsidiaries to generate savings of $25 million.
