Calpers is the largest pension fund in the US, and it has $68 billion in investments. The fund operators have become increasingly willing to use this economic clout and actually has an affect on the way companies do business. Gov Pete Wilson wants to change the way Calpers operates and move away from fixed pensions altogether.

Eastern Europe's nuclear power: buying peace of mind
Article Abstract:
Lithuania and other East European countries have received much advice on how to improve safety at nuclear plants, but what they really need is money to implement changes. Former Soviet bloc nations rely heavily on electricity from the plants because they have little gas or oil.

The drug peace in California
Article Abstract:
The percentage of the California prison population made up of drug offenders has dropped. This does not indicated a drop in drug use, but rather a drop in arrests for drug offenses by California police departments facing budget cuts and increased violent crime.
