Article Abstract:

Although the Eupen brewery in Belgian will close down with a loss of 17 jobs in September 1998, the Haacht brewery will produce the Eupner Bier, keeping the same production methods, and will market it. Haacht was that it will try to find jobs for some of the staff being laid off. Haacht produces Pepsi-Cola, Primus, Val and white beer. Eupen produced 7,000 hectolitres of beer per year. Haacht, which makes a turnover of BFr 3bn with a workforce of 435 people, is the third largest pils beer brewery in Belgium, following Interbrew and Alken-Maes.

Article Abstract:

Interbrew is very successful with its Hoegaarden beer, especially in the Netherlands, UK and US and France and other export countries where the demand grows by 10-20% a year. To face this success, the Belgian brewer is pumping BFr 150mn into the Hoegaarden plant, to increase the beer's capacity to 1mn hl a year from 700,000 hl today. The investment, which should be operational in July 1999, includes a rise in the water treatment plant's capacity.
