POPLAR BECOMES VIABLE WOOD SOURCE
Article Abstract:
The Poplar tree (poplus) can provide reasonable returns to farmers. Indian farmers in Haryana have demonstrated the commercial viability of the tree. Cultivation of Poplar can reduce the pressure on natural forests. Poplar has been planted in the northern plains of Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, North Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh. It is used in mixed farming system. It acts as a shelter belt and wind break, conserves soil, water, controls soil erosion and increases water intake capacity of the soil. Poplar wood fetches Rs1,000 per tree in the Yamuna Nagar timber market in Delhi. The wood is used to make plywood, hard wood, particle board, cricket bats, artificial limbs, match sticks and ice cream spoons. (vv)

IT WOOD BE SUCH A GOOD IDEA
Article Abstract:
The ministry of environment and forests has drafted a 10-year action plan to bring 33 percent of the country under forest cover. It is estimated that an investment of Rs10-15 per teakwood tree up to the fourth year after planting is enough to successfully raise a teakwood plantation. With progressive thinning in the seventh and thirteenth years and a final harvest of 500 trees per hectare in the twentieth year, it is possible to get returns of Rs25-30 lakh with an initial investment of Rs35,000 per hectare of teakwood plantation.
