AUSTRIA/EAST EUROPE: BEIERSDORF EXPANDS

Beiersdorf GesmbH, a Vienna-based subsidiary of the German chemicals group, aims to reach the Sch 2bn mark in turnover in year 2000. The company with 260 staff now has a turnover of Sch 1.5bn. Beiersdorf sees great potential on the Austrian cosmetics market, as the country has the third-highest per capita consumption of cosmetics after Switzerland and Germany. The German group has set up Beiersdorf CEE Holding in Vienna. The new company is responsible initially for the group's operations in Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Romania. It handles also exports to Bulgaria, former Yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and Albania and is a coordinator and consultant for activities in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

AUSTRIA: COSMETICS AT HENNES & MAURITZ

The Swedish fashion chain Hennes & Mauritz is to start selling private-label cosmetics at five Austrian outlets. H & M buys the products from suppliers of large cosmetics brands in Europe and the US. The products are not tested on animals. Prices of the 1,200 articles range from Sch 19 to Sch 99.
