AUSTRIA: EVN TESTING POWERLINE COMMUNICATION
Article Abstract:
In April 2001 the Austrian electricity company EVN is to conclude a test with so-called Powerline communication technology that allows transmissions of up to 10 Mb/second. The company estimates that with Powerline technology, telephony and internet access could be offered for about Sch 300 per month. In addition, the user needs an adapter that costs about Sch 1,000. The drawback is that the technology can be used only within a radius of 300 metres from a transformer station. This means that about half of Vienna could be connected. Due to the limited number of frequencies, about a quarter of households in a block of 100 flats, for instance, could be connected the service.
