AUSTRIA: HIGHER PROFITS FOR PAPERMAKERS IN 1998
Article Abstract:
According to a study by the Arbeiterkammer, the return on equity of Austrian paper makers rose from 1% in 1997 to 13.3% in 1998. Operating profits surged 52.3% to Sch 2.4bn. Dividends were increased by 276.7% to Sch 1.8bn. The improvement is explained with the increase of output and savings in personnel costs. The number of jobs in the industry decreased by 2.2% to 7,670. An improvement was recorded also in financial results and results from participatory holdings. Also the development of income taxes was favourable. Investment by the Austrian paper makers in 1998 decreased from 9.8% of output in 1997 to 4.2% in 1998. The Arbeiterkammer study looked at 13 paper producers which hold 80% of the market between them.

AUSTRIA: STEYRERMUHL EXPECTING WORSE RESULTS

The Austrian paper producer Papierfabrik Steyrermuhl AG is suffering from the increasing prices of fuels and raw materials such as waste paper. Turnover is expected to fall from Sch 3.3bn to Sch 3.1bn and profits on ordinary activities from Sch 391mn to Sch 250mn in 1999.

The Austrian paper industry is to increase prices by 9% from September 1999. The printing industry will have to pass the price hike on to customers, according to Michael Hochenegg from the printing industry association.
