AUSTRIA: LOGISTICS INVESTMENT BY QUELLE

Quelle AG, Austria's leading mail order house, with a market share of 25%, is investing about Sch 500mn in a new logistics centre for central and eastern Europe and Switzerland in Linz, Austria. The facility that will be built on a 20,000-sq.m site and become operational in July 2002 will double the handling volume to more than 20mn pieces. From autumn 2001 Quelle is to improve internet service by sending an immediate reply to each order placed on-line. The company expects a turnover of more than Sch 200mn from internet sales in 2001. Two years ago the figure was Sch 30mn. The Austrian arm of the German company is to increase the number of staff by 200 from 1,755 at present. In year 2000 Quelle generated a turnover of Sch 4.93bn in Austria, up by almost 1% from 1999.

AUSTRIA: SPAR CHALLENGING REWE

In year 2000 Interspar is to concentrate its entire investment budget on the Vienna region in order to challenge the dominant Billa/Rewe group. In 1999 the company is investing a total of about Sch 400mn. Interspar is to revamp its 10 outlets in Vienna, emphasising "shopping as an experience".
