AUSTRIA: TELEKOM'S COMPETITIVE STRATEGY
Article Abstract:
The former monopoly Telekom Austria expects to lose about 30% of the Austrian market to competitors. So far it has lost about 15%. On 1 September 1999 Telekom Austria introduced new call rates, which involve a loss of revenue of about Sch 6bn annually. The loss is to be made up for by cost savings in the medium term. Staff is to be reduced by 1,600 people, and investment plans for the next five years were cut back to Sch 40bn. Telekom Austria will try to keep clients by introducing new products and offerings such as internet and ADSL. In spring 2000 Telekom is to revise call rates again. The company is to move away from differentiation between regional and long-distance rates and simplify the time zone structure. Billing by the second is to be introduced at the beginning of 2001. Telekom Austria expects a 10% fall in turnover in the next two years each. For 1999 the company expects a turnover fall of 1-2%. Earnings before interest and taxes are estimated at Sch 6.5bn, down from Sch 8.1bn in 1998.

AUSTRIA: TELEPHONE SERVICES BY CABLE & WIRELESS
Article Abstract:
One of the eight internet service providers in Europe acquired by Cable & Wireless of the UK is the Vienna-based company Xpoint. The Austrian company has filed for permission to offer telephone services and is to launch voice telephony services in the greater Vienna area by the end of year 2000. Cable & Wireless Xpoint sees voice over IP services only as an addition to its core data services. Rather than becoming a mass provider, the company will continue to offer tailored solutions to companies with fixed lines to C&W networks. C&W wants to become the leading business-to-business communications provider within a few years.
