AXA feels equitable: American insurance
Article Abstract:
AXA will buy a 49% equity stake in Equitable, giving the ailing US insurance company a much needed cash infusion. Equitable's decision to go public was based on its strong losses over the last few years. Investments in junk bonds and commercial property left the company insufficient statutory capital.

Traditionally initial public offerings (IPOs) have been so popular because investors have been able to sell their shares immediately and make a healthy profit. However a new study shows that IPOs do not provide nearly as good a return as do already traded stocks.

South African life insurance companies have had to respond in very innovative ways to the very high incidence of HIV infection and AIDS in that country's population. New policies either exclude people with HIV or are specifically designed for them.
