Jaded: new record set at spring auction
Article Abstract:
Jade prices have diverged sharply in recent years with high-quality or historic pieces fetching top dollar while lower-grade jewelry fell up to 30% in value. The jade most collectors seek comes only from Burma, and experts say the quality of new finds there is falling. Such jade is very rare and difficult to extract from the boulders in which it is found. That leads jewellers to make simpler pieces, which have less value. Auction houses betting jade prices will rise more count on mainland Chinese to acquire the taste.

All at sea
Article Abstract:
Arco's natural-gas platform in the South China Sea is noteworthy as one of the first oil rigs in this region of violent storms and for ability to be run from a high-tech shore station. The station can withstand 75-foot waves and has been evacuated several times during tropical storms. On the rig, workers can fish and exercise, but their lives are arduous and boring for the most part.
