Acer is launching a new kind of PC
Article Abstract:
Acer Inc. of Taiwan will introduce a new kind of desktop computer, the XC, that will cost as low as $199. The XC, unlike the typical PC, will use Microsoft Corp.'s low-end Windows CE operating system instead of Windows 95. Likewise, the XC will not include a hard disc for data storage or a monitor but can be connected to a PC monitor or TV. The XC, which will utilize Intel's microprocessor technology, will use low-end chips from other manufacturers that are compatible with older Intel designs. Modems for internet access and CD-ROM drives will be included. Acer said the XCs will be available in markets such as China by the fourth quarter of 1998.

Les trains grande vitesse en question
Article Abstract:
In Taiwan, Siemens and GEC-Alsthom have teamed up for the construction of a US$ 13.5bn high speed train line. Although these two European firms had planned to work together on other Asian markets in order to alleviate Japanese competition, the accident of the German ICE high speed train has hurt their plans. Taiwanese authorities have let it be known that they are going to 'increase their vigilance.'
