Airline efficiency differences between Europe and the US: implications for the pace of EC integration and domestic regulation
Article Abstract:
The European Court of Justice's decision to apply the competition rules of the Treaty of Rome to the European airline industry marks the liberalization of the European civil aviation industry. The emergence of a more concentrated European market structure seems to be the current trend after this development. Efficiency and productivity differentials among carriers are identified through the analysis of data on European and US carriers from 1976-1986. Deregulation and privatization could greatly benefit the European airline industry in terms of efficiency and productivity.
