The political situation in Russia and the other members of the Commonwealth of Independent States is far from stable. Right now Boris Yeltsin is in firm command of Russia, and has some influence with other states, but unrest and panic arising from high prices, scarcity of food and ethnic divisions could bring about his fall.

Yeltsin's coup: Russia
Article Abstract:
The new Security Council of Russia has powers and political clout that may endanger Yeltsin's role as president. The council has a too broad of a role in protecting Russia's vital interests, and Yeltsin has found it difficult to have his decisions carried out by the council.

Russian Pres Yeltsin is showing signs of vindictiveness against political enemies, such as Mikhail Gorbachev. Yeltsin is encouraged to reject authoritarianism in favor of a renewed commitment to his free market reforms.
