America's puzzling economy
Article Abstract:
US interest rates were raised by 0.25% in Nov 1999, and this is a wise move, though rates should have been raised earlier and by more. Economic growth is too strong, and there is a need for rate rises to prevent overheating. There are problems in setting interest rates when the sustainable level of economic growth cannot easily be calculated. US labor markets are tight, and there are imbalances such as current account and savings deficits. There is greater risk and uncertainty attached to monetary policy.

To cut or not to cut
Article Abstract:
Decisions on US interest rates are to be made on Sep 29 1998. There is fear of a deterioration in world financial conditions, which could affect the US economy, and financial markets forecast a reduction in US rates. The US economy still appears to be vigorous, but manufacturing and other areas are showing some signs of weakness. Consumption could drop as stock prices fall. Lower rates could also lead to a weaker US dollar, which would ease pressure on countries with currencies linked to the US dollar.
